Acupuncture and herbal medicine may be beneficial to improve fertility. Conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, poor egg quality, low sperm count, poor motility and morphology, and others that impede fertility may be improved with a course of treatment.
Acupuncture, herbs, moxibustion and dietary therapy are the main therapies used to boost fertility. The length of treatment will depend on the severity and chronicity of the condition, as a general rule of thumb 1 year’s illness will take 1 month’s continued treatment to address.
Giving your baby the best start in life starts before you even conceive. Preconception care ideally should start three months before conception and involves both parents. Positive changes you can undertake at home include stopping the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and recreational drugs, taking prenatal vitamins, eating a healthy and well balanced diet, exercise, and avoiding exposure to toxic chemicals and environments.
If you have a pre-existing condition that may impact conception and/or pregnancy (PCOS, Endometriosis, thyroid issues, habitual miscarriage, unexplained infertility etc) then a more tailored program under a well trained practitioner may be required.
Elemental Chinese Medicine offers preconception care using acupuncture and herbal medicine and other Chinese Medicine therapies to increase your chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby. Our preconception care programs includes an initial detailed consultation and physical examination followed by a series of twice weekly, weekly or fortnightly treatments to address the underlying issues. For people having problems conceiving a treatment period of 3-6 months minimum is required to see any result.During your treatment progress will be monitored by charting your menstrual cycle and other laboratory tests and indicators.
IVF support protocol:
We follow a standard clinically trialed IVF Acupuncture protocol for our patients undergoing IVF. A course of acupuncture treatments is given prior to embryo transfer to prepare your body for the procedure. At embryo transfer one treatment of acupuncture will be given at least 24 hours before the transfer and another treatment will be given as soon as possible after the transfer to increase the chances of implantation. Studies by (Margarelli P et al, 2009) have shown that this protocol may increase the success rate by 65%.
Another treatment is given one week after the transfer to support the body in holding the embryo. Treatments will then focus on supporting your pregnancy if the implantation is successful. In the unfortunate event of you needing to complete another cycle of IVF the treatment focus will be on getting your body ready for the next cycle.
Pregnancy is an exciting period in your life but it also places a lot of demands on your body and mind. Chinese Medicine may be used to support the pregnant woman to reduce any undesired pregnancy symptoms, help prevent an early miscarriage, and promote a smooth delivery.
Pregnant women may benefit from Chinese Medicine in the following ways:
First Trimester: reduce nausea and morning sickness, improve energy levels and reduce the risk of an early miscarriage and reduce anxiety levels.
Second Trimester: maintenance to support energy levels and other symptoms if required.
Third Trimester: prepare your body for birth and promote rotation of the baby, relieve aches and pains.
Chinese Medicine and acupuncture may help after you have given birth as well. Benefits include: replenishing lost energy and blood, promote healthy lactation, relieve mastitis, address continued bleeding/spotting, and relieve abdominal pain.
Menstrual irregularities, painful periods, PMT symptoms and menopausal symptoms may all benefit from Chinese Medicine. The menstrual cycle is a key part of female health and wellbeing, and regulating the cycle is a key strength of Chinese Medicine. Treatments will be customised to treat each phase of your menstrual cycle and may consist of acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, cupping and moxibustion.
You will also be guided in how to look after your health at different life stages from a Chinese Medicine perspective.
